Why Fall is the Time to Seed
July 30, 2020 | By: Randy Tischer
Cheap seed is the most expensive seed you can ever buy. This is why if you’re going to pay a premium for premium grass seed you should be sure to plant your grass seed at the proper time.
Over the last 60 plus years of planting seed here at Green Velvet, we have found Fall (specifically the middle of August to the end of September) to be the absolute best time of the entire year to plant grass seed.
Why is this? Unlike Spring when our soils are still trying to warm up from the winter freeze, soils in the Fall have been heated by the summer sun and are at their warmest levels of the entire year. Competition from annual grasses and broadleaf weeds are also reduced. In the fall you can expect tall fescue to germinate in 7 days or less, and Kentucky bluegrass not too far after that.
Let Your Grass Seed Succeed
By planting in the proper fall seeding window of the middle of August through the end of September, you will give your grass the best chance to succeed and allow it the proper amount of time it needs to mature before winter arrives.
A successful Fall seeding is as easy as 1,2,3:
- Start by selecting the right seed blend or mix for your unique needs. We can help you with that.
- Ensure the seed has contact with the soil and finish by “feeding the baby” with Green Velvet’s seed starter fertilizer
- Of course, be sure to add water!
